A Record Collector's Guide to
The Fluid

Singles

There were not all that many singles released by the Fluid.  The bulk of their vinyl story comes from their LPs.  There were five 7"s and a handful of promo cds from the Hollywood era.

Tin Top Toy b/w Tomorrow
Sub Pop SP57, released 1989

The labels on this record are marked as SP56, but the sleeve is correctly printed as SP57.  The first pressing of this one was on orange vinyl.  This is also the easiest color to find.  There were quite a few made on orange.  The yellow pressing reportedly came next, and is a rare color, limited to 500.  Also pressed on grey marble, purple marble, pink and black.  I also just came across a color that I am calling "burnt orange."  It is a darker orange than the straight orange color, and has some marbling in it with an even darker color (I can't tell whether this is black or something else).  I had heard rumors of an "orange-brown" version, and can only guess that this is what the person was talking about.  Regardless, it is clearly different from the regular orange version.  Take a look at the pictures.  They were done on the same scanner.  I have heard various rumors of a red version, but those always turn out to be orange.

Summary:

Version/Color Approximate value ($)
Orange - common 5
Yellow - rare (500) 25
Purple Marble - medium rare 15
Pink - medium rare 15
Grey Marble - rare 20
Burnt Orange - very rare 25-30
Black - common 5

Sleeve: Paper foldover with loose insert

Test pressing: Black vinyl, small hole, plain white labels.

Rumors:
Red version.  If anyone has one of these, please email me and send pics.

Colorado Krew III Compilation 2x7"
Disc 1:Keep in Mind - Yours/Dogbite - Verge of Nothing b/w Again - Bradin Full On/Jun County - Pick Your Brain
Disc 2: The Fluid - Don't Wanna Play/Hobbledhoy - Turn Back the Clock b/w Acid Pigs - White Lie/Warlock Pinchers - Confrontation Yeah! Yeah!
Donut Crew DCR007/DCR008, released 1990

Local Colorado compilation that seems to have made its way everywhere.  I have seen this record in every corner of the globe.  It's truly remarkable.  It says it is a pressing of 1000, but I feel as though it must be more.  I did not see the ones with the red sleeves for a while, so maybe they repressed it.  It contains a version of the Fluid song "Don't Wanna Play" that is different from the one that appears on Freak Magnet.

Cover/Insert

Spot the Loon EP - My Kind/Cell/Kick Out the Jams/Hey 13
Fellaheen Records - Jack 001-2, released 1993

Strange Australian EP.  This was the only place you could get the last two tracks on here, including my favorite non-MC5 version of Kick Out the Jams.  Hey 13 is really good too.
