A Record Collector's Guide to
Sub Pop Singles:
Sub Pop Singles Club V2

This page details the entire series of the second Sub Pop Singles Club, which spanned 51 singles from April 1998 to March 2002.  This edition of the club was a bit hit or miss, in my opinion, and I think it contained more misses than hits.  I'm not saying it wasn't quality material...just mostly not my style.  I have just never been a big fan of the lo-fi, minimalist sound that is pervasive in many of these records.  There were definitely a few gems mixed in, and a good number of very collectable records.  Let's take a look, shall we?

I apologize for the image quality.  I did not take these pictures with this intent.  These were from the batch that went up with my first big Singles Club set sale a couple of years ago.  These were also the last ones done, when I did not have as much light.  I would scan them, but I do not own most of them anymore.

The second run of the Singles Club had thick-stock paper sleeves.  They spared no expense.  Sub Pop resurrected the attached perforated Singles Club subscription forms for a good portion of this run, only discontinuing it when they knew they were bringing the project to an end.  I have not seen many test pressings from this batch, but the ones that I have seen have all looked the same: black vinyl, small holes, generic yellow Erika Records test pressing labels.  Like this:

SP 527 - The White Stripes - Party of Special Things To Do b/w China Pig/Ashtray Heart

Sub Pop Singles Club V2 #33, released December 2000, 1300 copies on split red & white vinyl...aaaaaand suddenly Sub Pop mattered again.  Thank you very much, John Peel.  You know how it works...no matter how knowledgeable we like to think we are as collectors, at the end of the day, the UK drives the market.  This record showed up with some regularity on John Peel's radio show, and its value subsequently took off.  It has leveled off to around the $350 mark, but between 2001 and 2002, the value skyrocketed.  I sold my first copy when I was unemployed in the summer of 2002 for over $150.  I don't love this record.  I think the White Stripes have their moments, but that this wasn't one of them.  This record also began the very cool-looking trend of split vinyl colors. This one was half red and half white.  Looks great.

Red & White Split (1300) 250-350

Sleeve: Thick stock paper foldover w/ insert attached
