A Record Collector's Guide

Rocket from the Crypt Singles

Well, this page was a long time coming.  Lots of collectible material in the illustrious catalogue of Rocket from the Crypt.  I was originally planning on just doing the vinyl, but decided to add some cds in as well.  I expect to update this section a lot as I get in some pics of the crazy rare variations of things.  Please remember that this is a guide.  The values listed are rough approximations based on sales and auctions that have taken place over the last three years.  Many records on here have sold for much more and much less than the values listed.  Enjoy.

Rocket Pack

Cut It Loose b/w Glazed

Pusmort 200772, released September 1991

I don't care what hard core collectors tell you their prize is - the Rocket Pack is still the holy grail of Rocket from the Crypt collecting.  Released by Pushead (this will be a recurring theme here) as part of his fan club, it was limited to 75 copies.  Another 30 were made for the band.  All are hand numbered and signed by Pushead.  Many are on pink marble vinyl, but some range into the red category.  Most of the red ones ended up being used for the Septic Death split. Supposedly, there are a couple (i.e. TWO) on white vinyl.  Don't hold out for those.

The price for the Rocket Pack was starting to come down a bit in 2007, which is when I locked up my copy, but I have not seen one for sale since, so who knows where the value will go the next time it appears for sale.  The wide price range I have given here represents all of the prices for which I have seen it sold over the past few years.  The sleeve is great for this one - It has a semi-standard foldover paper sleeve, but then it also comes with a felt rocket, which folds around the whole thing.  Good times.  Definitely the crown jewel of my collection.

I thought it would be fun and informative to steal the Love Buzz idea from Enrico's sliver.it and assemble an owner's list for the Rocket Pack.  Take a look...it's starting to come together.

Yum Kippered

Bad Ninja/Goodbye b/w Kill the Funk (There Will Be No Funk in Outer Space)

Helter Skelter HS92712, released June 1992

Single #2.  This one came out on everybody's favorite Italian label, Helter Skelter.  It exists on both yellow and black vinyl..

The plot continues to thicken for this release: there are three different black vinyl versions, each with different labels.  I may have determined which came first.  All of the black ones have stamps on them in Italian, which was required by the Italian government.  Upon examining two black versions next to each other, I discovered that there is a difference between the stamps.  They are almost identical, except that one has a "1" in the middle and the other has a "2".  I am now fairly sure these refer to first and second pressings.

- Original black copies have small center holes, Yum Kippered labels on the A sides, and spiral text labels on the B sides.  This one also has an Italian stamp on the A side label with a "1" in the middle.  There's a picture below, but it is really hard to see the "1" in it...it's there, though.  The matrix codes read: SPIRI LATO A ROCKET HS 92712 A / SPIRI LATO B ROC HS92712 B.  They are the exact same matrix codes as on the other pressings, but with the added HS92712 parts.  One would think this would mean it was pressed later than the others, but that is not necessarily true.  Matrix codes can be added at multiple stages of the pressing process.  The aforementioned stamp is one indicator that this one came first.

- Second pressing black copies have Helter Skelter labels on the A sides, and Yum Kippered labels with Italian stamps on them on the B-sides.  This Italian stamp has a "2" in the middle.  There are additional second pressing black copies that have squeezed spiral labels on them, designed for large-cut holes...but used with small holes.  Matrix codes: SPIRI LATO A ROCKET / SPIRI LATO B ROC.

- The yellow copies look to have been a third pressing.  They did not seem to appear until much later.  They have large-cut center holes, Yum Kippered labels minus the Italian stamps on the A sides, and squeezed spiral text labels on the B sides.  The yellow one also comes with an unused 7" label, containing a picture of Speedo with GG Allin.  What I can almost guarantee happened here is this: when Helter Skelter went to press the yellow copies, the label was given the Speedo/GG label to use on one side of the record.  However, the re-press had a large-cut hole, which would have entirely cut out the faces on the Speedo/GG labels, so they had to go another route...and that route ended up being using the labels from the original pressing but slightly modified.  Matrix codes: SPIRI LATO A ROCKET / SPIRI LATO B ROC.

Of course, the yellow ones sell for more than the either of the black ones because people like color vinyl.  They look like the later pressing, though.

Boychucker b/w Jumper K. Balls/Lefty

Sympathy for the Record Industry SFTRI-179, released June 1992

Rocket's Sympathy debut.  The initial pressing was a really cool picture disc.  A handful of the picture discs (I have heard 50) are floating around that have a red line around the border.  A mispressed version has surfaced that has the same image on the front and the back of the record.  I have also come across a variation that has a beige or tan background in place of white.  My initial thought was that this just yellowed over time, but upon examination, I don't think that is the case.  It appears to just be a different base color. See images below...it's much easier to see the difference on Side B.

Boychucker was later re-pressed as a normal black vinyl disc with a picture sleeve, and that version came with two of five RFTC pogs.  It turns out there are many label variations for this pressing.  I have included as many pictures as I could find below.  The most common one has labels made to look like the two sides of the picture disc.  The other ones all appear to be generic Sympathy labels.  The one with A's and B's all over it appears regularly. The others are all harder to find.  These are the ones I have found so far.

Most variations are on solid black vinyl, but I have one that is on translucent black vinyl, which is slightly lighter in weight.  Please let me know by if you have a different version.

Rocket was apparently busy during the summer of '92.  This one was a one-sided MC5 cover...brutal record.  500 copies on gold vinyl, some (I have heard 50) come with Mardi Gras-esque beads.  There is also theoretically a version of this pressed in very limited quantities (8-10) that has a full-color sleeve.

Pusmort-A-RFTC/200775, released August 1992

The Rocket Pack wasn't enough, huh?  Pushead had to torture the collecting community with this one as well.  Limited to 100 copies...in theory.  It is numbered out of 100.  However, according to Pushead, there were actually only 85 of these released.  Perhaps he is still hanging onto the other 15.  There is an image below of a catalogue he sent out in 1995 advertising some of his leftover vinyl.  The catalogue is consistent with the 85 copy claim.

On most copies, the Rocket 7" is red and the Septic Death one is yellow, but they also exist where the Rocket 7" is pink.  The Rocket disc is the exact same one that went into the Rocket Pack.  In fact, leftover copies from that pressing were used for this release.  The sleeve glows in the dark.  It also comes with stickers for both bands.

Smells Like Grease for Peace

RFTC - Cha Cha Cha b/w Deadbolt - Down in the Lab

Standard Recordings SR-72, released October 1992

Black vinyl.  Limited to 1000 numbered copies.  There is a slight sleeve variation that I noticed.  Some sleeves are on bluish paper, and others on yellowish paper.  I don't know if it was an even split between the two types of sleeves, but they seem to be equally prevalent in the market.  I have reports from others who also own both sleeve variations, and there seems to be no definitive pattern in the numbering.  I have also heard that there were some of these (50) pressed on pink vinyl, but have never seen one.  Incidentally, if you are reading this and know who ran the short-lived Standard Recordings, please contact me.  I have a couple of questions for them.

Pusmort 400777, released 1993

Pushead strikes again.  This record has three different sleeves (but thankfully, the vinyl is the same - black - for all three).  All are signed and hand-numbered by Pushead and sent to his fan club.  The sleeves are: 1. Grey granite sleeve, pink & yellow ink (300 copies). 2. Brown granite sleeve, red & black ink (69 copies). 3. Ghetto Box Rock

Lie b/w Video Reign Man

Snap Crackle Punk SCP-001, released 1993

Originally released in conjunction with Speed Kills Magazine #4.  The record came in a white paper sleeve with a couple of things stamped on it, and was stapled to the mag.  The first press was on black vinyl.  It was later re-pressed in two forms: red vinyl with a red thick paper sleeve, and then black vinyl (identical to the 1st press) with a blue paper sleeve.  The later pressings were numbered, so we can guess how many of each were made.  Red-sleeved ones seem to roughly span numbers from 1-2000, and blue ones go from around 2000 up.  I don't think they go beyond 3000, though, which would mean the blue sleeves are more scarce.

Bacteria Sour SOUR 2/SOUR 3, released 1994

This might be the only Pushead-related record I have ever seen that is not worth anything.  All on black vinyl.  There must have been many of these pressed, as it is a pretty easy and inexpensive find.

HOWEVER...there is also a record out there that was a rejected test pressing of the Rocket version of this record.  It is a completely different record, containing Cut It Loose, Glazed, and Pressure's On.  There are EIGHT of them in existence, and it was sent out by Pushead in an inside-out sleeve, signed and hand-numbered, along with all sorts of other goodies, including a sculpture.  Not an easy find.

Tattoo

Perfect Sound, released 1995

Here we go.  The Tattoo record.  One of the more legendary moments in the story of Rocket from the Crypt.  Pressed as one of the rewards for fans who got RFTC tattoos (along with, theoretically, getting into all of the band's shows for free).  I don't know exactly how many of these were pressed, but it could not have been many.  I would say a couple hundred tops.  They ran out pretty quickly...I am guessing that the band did not anticipate that as many people would get inked as eventually happened.  Anyway, it is a one-sided record - clear vinyl with print on one side showing through the vinyl, so it appears as a picture disc, but isn't.  Personalized by the band for each member of the army.  Highly sought...which, of course, annoys some people.  There are a lot of people out there who get pissed off about copies of this record being sold.  I am of the opinion that if the owner wants to unload it, it is entirely up to them.  Of course, I think it is asinine to want to sell it, but not everyone is all that into vinyl.  A strange idea, I know.  As it is, the only people who received these records modified their bodies before doing so, and so, as you can imagine, they are not sold very often.  It does happen, though.

I Flame You

Perfect Sound, released 1995

Released by the band as a mail-order giveaway.  I recall this as being related to the Atomjack email list (hence "I Flame You"...), but others remember it differently as an item available through the Speedo's Army mailing list.  One-sided black vinyl release.  The b-side is etched.  I always thought this one would be more valuable than it has proven to be.  You never can tell sometimes.

Used b/w Lose Your Clown

Dinked (no #), released 1996

Referred to as "Tattoo Single #2," this single was released in conjunction with a pair of Rocket from the Crypt in-store performances in London.  Black vinyl with plain white labels.  It also came with a jukebox tag with the tracks printed on it, and the ones given away at the in-stores were wrapped in posters advertising the in-stores.  Some other copies ended up in various London record stores, and some others were given away to Tattoo club members.  Purportedly, no more than 200 were pressed.  I originally had the value for this one listed as $50-$80, because that was the range of the prices the record fetched the last few times it was auctioned.  However, it had been a good long time before one was sold.  I did have one conflicting report of someone who sold one back in 2004 for a LOT more (we're talkin' 350 euros).  That is not a normal price for this record.  Another was finally auctioned in November 2008.  It went for just over $200.  That seems to be the more realistic range these days.

Glazed GLZ-001, released December 1999

This single was the inaugural release of Glazed Records, a project undertaken by Bill, who did the original rftc.com site.  Released on several colors: 200 on gold/black mixed vinyl, 550 on red vinyl, and 2000 on black vinyl.  It came with an insert.  There are also supposedly 5-8 copies on straight yellow vinyl.  I think there are probably more than that, but I'm just one guy talkin'.  Bill, Glazed Records owner, confirmed for me that the clear yellow copies were unintended variations of the yellow/black copies.  I would bet that every clear yellow copy actually has some black in it, but it is obscured by the labels. The black vinyl version was later re-pressed, but without the insert.

This is the one of a wave of bootlegs that appeared along with Rocket from the Crypt's mid-90s takeover of the UK.  Two 7"s and two 12"s surfaced, all around the same time.  Black vinyl.  Wegi tells me the band was selling this and the Star Search record below on their 1996 European tour.  According to Wegi, the band said that they caught the bootlegger before he could get the records into stores, and they took over.

Lipstick/Break It Up/When in Rome/Watusi '98/Panic Scam

Live at BBC Studios, July 1998, released 1998

The title pretty much says it all.  This cd surfaced very soon after the band made its triumphant return to the UK to promote RFTC in 1998.  Recorded in July, and I am pretty sure I got it in Japan in August.  Excellent version of Lipstick, and the instrumental "Watusi '98" is one of my favorite instrumentals of all time.  Wegi told me that Rocket was selling these when they were on tour in Germany in 1998.  So...did they actually catch a bootlegger, as they purportedly said for the two 7"s, or did they have a hand in the production?  Interesting...
